Entroterra San Leo

SAN LEO

San Leo is a jewel of the Marecchia Valley in the Montefeltro area. This small village is hung to a rocky buttress on top of which is the famous Rocca. Here lived the ruthless Cesare Borgia, called 'Valentino' during the pontificate of his father Alexander VI (1502). In 1795, after being excommunicated and imprisoned by the Inquisition, the alchemist and cunning persuader Giuseppe Balsamo, better known as Count Cagliostro, died in the fortress dungeons. Today the medieval village of San Leo offers some interesting buildings including the Pieve romanica (Romanesque parish church), the oldest religious building in San Leo and in the whole Montefeltro area, which was evangelised by St. Leon in the III and IV century; the Cathedral, erected in 1173 and housing the oldest existing bust of the eponymous saint; the magnificent Bell Tower, a little away from the centre proper. Dating back to the Renaissance, the beautiful Palazzo Mediceo (1517 - 1523), the Earls' Palazzo Nardini and the XVII-century Palazzo della Rovere, where the successors to the Montefeltros in the Dukedom of Urbino lived.
